Re: storage heating units to work in conjunction with Solar vacuum panels. I think the most efficient system would take heat excess during the summer months and store it in a very well insulated cube in the cellar. It would then be released during the winter months. The cube should contain Wax or Napthalene which melt at a temperature higher than the output temperature needed (the temperature gradient is also important, and underfloor heating would work best because the output temperature need not be > 28deg C. This allows easier heat transfer and use pf more heat from the store). The greatest difficulties are SIZE and INSULATION. Size - I worked out that my cellar could easily accomodate a box with a vol of 2m^3. The wax in that box at 70deg C would contain approx 300 MJ of useable heat. Insulation - using Promalite 330 or a similar material say 6 inches thick this would take over 6m to cool down (I think!!). The difficulty of pipework would mean you had to have a detatchable input/ output pipe to allow the insulation to be replaced when heat transfer was not taking place.
