ST-5 Water Heater Expansion Tank?

A plumber came today to fix something, and he told me that I need to replace the water heater ST-5 expansion tank (I think it is 2 gallon size), since there is no air in there any more. The house was built in 2001. A friend of mine said he can do it for me. Questions:

1) What brand is a good brand to buy? I went to internet, it seems to point to Amtrol THERM-X-TROL ST-5 Expansion Tank, Model Number – ST-5.

2) Any plumbing supply company you recommend? I saw on ebay sell this brand for $32. Also at PlumberSurplus.com, sell it for $49

3) Do I need to buy any other accessories, when this tank is to be replaced? Such as connector or valve? What size? and what brand?

4) Anything else that I need to pay attention to?

Thanks for your help!!

How I Found A New Fun Hobby That Saves Me Money.

I’m sure you have been on-line and happened to see literature talking about Solar Energy Panel. I was recently on-line and I stumbled across a rather interesting guide. The guide said it would teach an average homeowner how they can save money on their electric bill by building a Solar Energy Panel. I have to admit I thought it was a bunch of hype. However my son had a science fair coming up and so I thought it would be a nice project we could tackle then enter it into the fair.

“What I Found Out Was Pretty remarkable”

After we watched the video guide. My son and I looked at each other and I said “well it doesn’t look that hard” Keep in mind he is only 9 years old so he had a funny look on his face when I said it. What I found out was pretty remarkable. it was very easy to follow the videos and it didn’t cost me a whole lot of money to build my first solar energy panel.

“Dad Will It Really Work”

I was also very impressed with how easy and cheap it was to build. However even though it was a fun project to accomplish I did wonder the same thoughts as my son. After we finished the panels my son looked up at me and said” dad will it really work” Hmm I don’t know lets give it a try.

“Now I’m saving Energy as well”

Once I followed all the video instructions and hooked everything up. I was amazed. I could not believe this cheap easy to build solar energy panel was actually generating electricity. I have to say that this was a very easy project to undertake and I’m glad i decided to buy the “solar energy panel video guide” because now I’m saving energy as well.

“If green ain’t your thing”

The really great part about this project is you don’t have to be a real into the whole green thing to do this. Even if green ain’t your thing. I found this to be a very easy way to save money and in the process I found a new hobby. I am currently making another solar energy panel for my big shed. I’m pretty confident it will power the whole shed for free.

I have to say i was very impressed with the solar energy panel video guide. I did not know what to exspect when I bought it so investing the little money I did to get it was a very wise decision.

Choosing Yourself A Solar Energy Training Course

Solar Energy has become a major part of our lives today with more and more people wanting to use solar energy in their homes and businesses as a way to save money as well as help our environment. Because of the large difference between solar energy and our traditional energy sources, solar energy training is required and recommended to ensure every detail is covered correctly. The internet offers many varieties of solar energy training depending on the level of learning you would like to obtain. Solar energy training may be in the form of simple one or two-day workshops, 6-week training programs or complete programs lasting a year or more and preparing the individual with every important aspect of solar energy. Here are some examples of some of the solar energy training courses that are available and what you can hope to gain from each of these.

Solar Electricity Workshop

This is a great choice for individuals that wish to gain employment n the solar industry, want to learn more about the solar technology in general or want to install solar energy in their own home. This solar energy training workshop may be offered in a 6-day session or a 2-week program. The student will learn how to safely design and install different types of solar electric systems. The workshops involve part classroom and part hands on in the PV lab yard. The student will be expected to be able to do the system correctly.

PV Design (online)

This program lasts for six weeks and will teach the student to design an entire solar electric power system (photovoltaic) all inside your home. Although it’s an online course, the same topics will be covered that are in the face to face classrooms offering PV Training. A lot of this solar energy training involves text books, CDs, reading materials and resource links online. For additional hands-on experience, students can combine this solar energy training with a PV Lab course.

Advanced PV- NEC Compliance and Design Criteria

If you’re a student that wants to learn more than just how to install a solar system in your home, this is the perfect choice for your level of solar energy training. Upon completion of this course, you’ll be ready to seek employment in the solar industry. You’ll be able to follow the design and installation of a PV system as well as dealing with m
1000
aintenance and troubleshooting issues. This advanced solar energy training puts special emphasis on learning how to be compliant with the National Electric Code. Students must have successfully completed a hands-on workshop for PV design and installation prior to taking this advanced course.

Solar energy is a very wide range in terms of possible options and their solar energy training courses and programs are equally diversified. Some other very popular choices for solar energy training include renewable fuels, solar thermal (solar hot water & solar heating systems), wind power, sustainable home design, straw bale building, building natural homes and more.

Why is a portable water expansion tank needed on my hot water pipe line?

We recently moved to a colder climate area and the house we bought has a portable water expansion tank installed on the cold water line going into the hot water heater. I had not seen this before and wanted to know what function it serves and if it is really nessary. Mainly because when the hot water is first turned on anywhere in the house I can hear the pipes thumping for a few minutes while the water runs and I'm guessing it's the expantion tank relieving it's pressure.

The majority of RV water heaters and motorhome water heaters are either Suburban water heaters or Atwood water heaters. RVs, which do not have Suburban or Atwood water heaters, are usually high end motor homes which may have either instantaneous water heaters or some type of engine assist water heaters. Here we’re going discuss leaking, weeping water heaters, or more specifically weeping pressure temperature relief valves. (Commonly referred to as P&T relief value).

P&T relief valves can be an area of confusion for Rv’ers until they understand the purpose and function of the P&T valve and whether or not they are functioning properly. In other words a P&T valve which is always weeping way not necessarily be bad. Let me explain why.

PURPOSE OF P&T RELIEF VALVE

RV water systems are closed systems, which mean there must be a means of relieving excess pressure when it develops. The obvious question then is what would cause excess pressure to develop in the tank. We know H2O expands when heated so we might then conclude there is always excess pressure in the water tank. This is true…only to a point however. A properly functioning RV water heater always has an air expansion pocket in the top of the tank. What is an air expansion pocket? It is simply an air pocket, which naturally forms in the water heater tank when it is filled.

As long as this air expansion pocket is of sufficient size, the only time the P&T relief water valve will weep is during the heating cycle. However, as hot water is taken from the tank the size of the air expansion pocket will diminish eventually to the point where the tank is practically full of water. When it reaches this point the inside pressure of the tank will almost always be excessive ( over the 125/150 psi rating for the P&T valve) resulting in excessive weeping of the P&T valve. Rv’ers not aware of this may mistakenly conclude the P&T valve is bad when it is not. To further complicate matters they may replace the valve and in the process re-introduce an adequate air expansion pocket and then it will naturally work fine…. until the air expansion pocket is diminished again and the whole process repeats itself. Rv’ers replacing numerous P&T valves are most likely doing it needlessly. So what is the answer? Reintroduce an adequate air expansion pocket and this is how it is done:

1.	Turn water heater off.

2.	Turn off water supply (city H2O or H2O pump).

3.	Open closest hot H2O faucet in RV.

4.	Open the P&T valve by pulling on handle at end of valve and allow H2O to flow until it stops.

5.	Release handle on P&T valve – it should snap shut. ( do this a couple of times as it may stick).

6.	Close hot water faucet.

7.	Turn on H2O supply – Now that everything is closed the tank will refill and air expansion pocket will be re-established.

Repeat the above procedure if P&T valve continues to weep between heating cycles. If this is not successful then the P&T valve should be replaced.

Mitsubishi Mini Split System – Is It Your Best Choice In Air Conditioning?

More and more, the Mitsubishi mini split system is becoming a popular method for people to cool and heat their homes. So, what is this system and why is it so popular?

The mini split is a duct-less cooling and heating system that was developed and perfected by the Mitsubishi Electric Company to efficiently regulate the temperatures of homes and offices. The system has two major units that are connected to each other through refrigerant lines and, often, copper tubing.

One of the major units is installed on the inside wall of the home or office building and the other unit is installed against the outside wall of the home or office. The “outside” unit takes in air from the outside of the structure and blows it through the refrigerant line and tubing to the indoor unit which blows the now cooled (or heated) air into the room.

There are several major advantages to the Mitsubishi mini split system. The first is that it allows homeowners to install air conditioning units into homes that do not have air ducts installed. Another big advantage is that it allows for room by room temperature control, which means that there is not as much strain on your home’s energy supply as you would have from a unit that would work to control the temperature of an entire house.

Finally, this AC unit does not pose the same threat of harm as other types of air conditioning units. Window-installed air conditioning units are known for leaking coolant and water or damaging the window frame, not to mention how noisy they are. This unit is installed into the wall itself and poses no such issues.

The mini split system from Mitsubishi is a solid option for homeowners who live in dwellings that do not have duct work already installed. This heating and cooling system is quick to install, easy to maintain and more cost efficient than other types of air conditioning and heating units that are currently on the market.

These energy creating or converting devices include wind power or windmills and solar panels to create the electricity for a green energy home. A savvy home owner can also utilize passive solar energy for the heating of hot water and heating his home during the winter … Windmills and solar panels can produce all the electricity a green home may need. Calculate the amount of power used and design the renewable energy system to meet your needs on a worst day scenario. …

This simple design has survived Montana winters with temperatures down to minus 30F with not even a hint of a problem, while providing an unusually high solar fraction of 94% (75% is typical of commercial solar hot water systems.) …

Guest Author: Cooler Planet Solar Heating (Solar Thermal) SystemsUsing solar power to heat your water is one of the most practical and cost effective ways to.

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

While it does not happen regularly, you might find that your baseboard radiator heat system could experience pump failure. There are a number of pumps in the system, so the likelihood of one of them eventually failing is great. So, how would you know which pump it is? When a pump fails it is usually not the whole pump, normally the bearings in the pump fail and the pump becomes noisy. So, if your pump starts making lots of noise you could probably assume the bearings are beginning to fail, and need to be replaced. Replacement is usually a fairly simple task since most systems have isolation valves on both sides of the pump so that it can be removed with little loss of water from the system.

Another relatively simple pump problem that could cause pump failure is that pump seals also develop leaks. This is not common, but it is a possibility. If this occurs you need to reseal the pump.

Another possible problem with your baseboard radiator heat system could be boiler failure. This is similar to a water heater failure; the boiler can also develop leaks, so if your boiler seems to be a problem check for the heating element first, and then for leaks. The likelihood of a heating failure is slim, water heaters fail much more often, but in a baseboard radiator heat system the water generally enclosed and is not replenished on a regular basis, therefore, there is not a significant build-up of calcium in the tank as there is in your hot water tank which continually brings calcium into the water heater. That calcium which your system brings in will settle in the bottom of a water heater and causes hot spots and eventual failure of the water tank, this is not usually the case with the baseboard radiator heating system’s tank.

Another problem you might incur, and often comes as a result of decorating are leaks in the system. Sometimes when people decorate they nail or screw things into the walls, and if the contractor did not protect your system well, you may puncture some of the pipes. If you have a leak in your system it is normally obvious because you will see wet floors or carpets underneath the baseboard units.

Other problems include air being trapped in the system, this causes a gurgling sound in the system when the circulator is pumping water. If you hear this noise do not worry too much, often times systems have a small valve, much like a tire valve, at the high points in the system; this valve can be “bled” until all the air is removed and water starts flowing from the valve.

Problems like the overpressure valve blowing off can be caused by the air being removed from the expansion tank, but are not a normal failures. This really can’t happen, or won’t happen unless there is a leak at the top of the expansion tank. If this problem does occur however, the leak must be repaired and the system drained until the air is replaced in the expansion tank.

The radiator units in the baseboard radiator systems are typically made up of copper tubes with fine sheet metal fins attached. Occasionally these fins get clogged by dust and the only way to take care of the problem is to clean the tubes with a vacuum cleaner.

Really, a baseboard heating system is a great idea and you won’t likely run into many or any of the above problems. They are a great option, but one of the major shortfalls of a baseboard heating system is that there is no way to install central air conditioning systems, air filtering system or whole house humidifiers. The really good things is that they are quiet, and clean because they don’t blow air all over the house
